The Opera Choir presents one of the most powerful works in the history of music: Messa da Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi. The piece is at once a sacred rite and a grand musical drama, where profound human emotion—fear, hope, and overwhelming beauty—meets in an extraordinary interplay of choir, soloists, and orchestra.

Verdi’s Requiem was premiered in 1874 in memory of the writer Alessandro Manzoni, and it bears clear traces of a composer who was, above all, a master of opera. Here Verdi unleashes his full dramatic force: from fragile stillness and inward prayer to the terrifying Day of Judgment in the famous Dies Irae, where the choir plays a central role in heightening the sense of dread and emotional intensity.

The Opera Choir rises to the challenge of this demanding and deeply emotional work with determination and artistry. Verdi’s Requiem places enormous demands on vocal power, precision, and interpretation, while also offering the choir the opportunity to display its full expressive range—from delicate, whispering phrases to blazing, forceful choral climaxes.

This performance is a profound musical experience that touches on fundamental questions of human existence, drawing listeners into a world where music speaks directly to the heart.

The Opera Choir performs the work in collaboration with Kyrja, bringing together the voices and strengths of two accomplished choirs.

Joining the Opera Choir are outstanding soloists, all firmly established among the country’s leading musicians:
Þóra Einarsdóttir – soprano
Hanna Dóra Sturludóttir – mezzo-soprano
Gissur Páll Gissurarson – tenor
Kristinn Sigmundsson – bass

The performance is conducted by Aron Axel Cortes, who leads the performers with confidence and sensitivity through this magnificent and demanding masterpiece by Verdi.

Approx.duration: 1 hr and 20 mins., without interval.
