Anna Sóley blends jazz with the aesthetics of a singer-songwriter in impressionistic compositions. The band performs original compositions from Anna’s album Modern Age Opheila and new songs from an upcoming album, along with a few compositions by Brian Blade, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Kenny Wheeler. Improvisation and instrumental expression play a fundamental role, especially in live performances. Musically, they explore different styles, with emphasis on Scandinavian jazz and folk music. The lyrics often portray a dream-like reality and are influenced by Icelandic paganism and philosophy. Anna's more recent lyrics explore behavioral patterns in modern-day society: how we paint our understanding of reality through the stories we tell ourselves. The American music critic and journalist David Fricke described Anna’s performance on Off-Venue Airwaves as “good, warm, and intimate.”
