Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle performed in Iceland for the first time – only two performances!

Where is the stage, dear audience? Is it within us? Or outside us?

In the prologue to Bluebeard’s Castle, the audience is invited into one of the most compelling psychological works in the history of opera. From the very beginning, it is unclear whether the castle is a real place or a reflection of our inner selves – a space of memories, desires, fears and secrets.

Bluebeard’s Castle explores, among other things, love, intimacy and truth. How well can we ever truly know another person – and how much truth can love endure?

Judith follows her new husband, Bluebeard, into his dark and gloomy castle, where seven doors are locked. Judith longs to know the man she loves and demands the keys to every door. Despite Bluebeard’s warnings, she opens them all, one by one. Behind each door, she discovers another side of him and his past. What begins as Judith’s search for truth gradually becomes something inevitable: she cannot stop until every door has been opened.

Behind the doors lie both darkness and light; horror and beauty. As Judith ventures deeper into the castle, the question becomes ever more pressing: How far should we go in our search for the truth about the person we love?

What do we keep hidden within ourselves? What does loneliness look like? How much can one person carry before something breaks? Do we have the right to know every secret of those we love?

More than a hundred years after Bartók composed the opera to a libretto by Béla Balázs, these questions remain as urgent as ever.

Bluebeard’s Castle will be presented in a semi-staged production, using Stephen Higgins’ ingenious arrangement for seven-piece chamber ensemble. Higgins condenses Bartók’s immense sound world without losing the original colours that define the work. The arrangement has been performed around the world, including in London, Edinburgh, Toronto and Atlanta, as well as in Finland and China.

Dutch director Kenza Koutchoukali directed Bluebeard’s Castle for Opera Zuid in the Netherlands in 2024, and the Reykjavík Opera Days production draws inspiration from that staging, with kind permission.

In Bluebeard’s Castle, audiences can expect a gripping performance where voices, instruments and space come together in an electrifying encounter.
