Gunnlaugur Bjarnason, who hails from Selfoss, began his singing career in garage bands before moving early on into classical singing. In 2020, he completed an advanced diploma in classical singing from Menntaskólinn í tónlist, and three years later he earned a master’s degree in the same field from Royal Conservatoire The Hague in 2023.
In recent years, Gunnlaugur has firmly established himself on the Icelandic vocal music scene and has participated in numerous opera productions in Iceland, most recently in La Bohème with the performing arts group Óður and in the opera Sæmundur with the group Animato.
Gunnlaugur has also appeared at music festivals both in Iceland and abroad, including Bergen International Festival, Sönghátíð í Hafnarfirði, and Þjóðlagahátíð á Siglufirði, among others. He has also worked closely with composers on the premieres of new works.
Gunnlaugur is also trained as an Icelandic language scholar, and in that capacity he has, to great acclaim, co-hosted the podcast Flimtan og fáryrði together with Ármann Jakobsson, professor of medieval Icelandic literature.
